The Main Characters

Chris Godrand
The boy with no surname who one day receives a letter from Déynáir. He tells the story himself.
Ahra Retonk
Chatty, nervous and loyal. He meets Chris at the end of a bathing jetty and explains most things about the new world to him.
Retia Caritas
Brave, proud and the best strategist in her year. She sits alone until Chris sits down with her.
Nihil Mathson
Reserved, precise and proud. He and Chris are more alike than either of them cares to admit.
Alôpex
A white arctic fox who leapt straight into Chris's arms. She speaks to him in his thoughts and looks out for him.

Teachers and students at Déynáir

Edrin
The school's headmaster. He looks younger than you would expect, and he reacts strangely to Chris from the very first day.
Guvinor Haltora
The school's strict deputy headmaster, with jet-black eyes and a wolf at his side. His name is signed at the bottom of Chris's letter.
Professor Arcanus
The young teacher with the hood and the gold bracelet who leads the island test. No one knows what he is thinking.
Maka Retonk
Ahra's older brother and a senior student at Déynáir. He knows how the school works, and he comes down with his guitar to the First-Year Room.
Will Mathson
Nihil's open and friendly twin brother. His owl landed on his head and stayed there for twenty minutes.

Family and friends outside school

Surain
The quiet man behind Surain's Animal Shop, who shows the students the way to their Amícûs. He carries an old grief.
Arvia Caritas
Retia's mother. Her house in Tés Aváir is the first real home Chris experiences.
Cajis Caritas
Retia's thirteen-year-old little sister. She is always reading, and she tells it like it is.
Hanne
The cook at Fjordly. She has made Chris's breakfast since he was small, and she never answers what he asks.
