In short
- You can read the whole book without logging in. In that case we store nothing about you in our database.
- If you log in with Google or with a login link by email, we store what's needed for you to have an account, and your reading position.
- We count visits with Plausible, without cookies and without storing anything on your device. There is no advertising, and we do not sell your information.
- You can delete your own account on your profile page.
When you read without logging in
The site stores nothing about you in the database. Your browser itself stores your choice of theme, text size and reading mode (scroll or pages, autoscroll speed and full screen) and how far you've reached in the book, so you can continue where you left off, and so the map can hide places from chapters you haven't reached yet. The choices themselves and your reading position stay on your device. When you change a setting, that is counted anonymously in the visitor statistics below, for example that someone chose the dark theme. See all cookies and storage keys.
To show you the pages, our server and Cloudflare, which sits in front of the server, receive the information any browser sends: your IP address, which page you're requesting, and which browser you use. The site does not store these in the database. Each time a page asks the server whether you're logged in, and when you log in or out, your IP address is also used briefly in the server's memory to stop too many requests in a short time. This happens as soon as login is switched on for the site, even if you never log in.
Visitor statistics
We count visits with Plausible, which Mads runs himself on his own server in the EU (at Hetzner). No cookies are set, and nothing is stored on your device. There is no Plausible script in your browser either: it is our own server that passes the information on.
When you open a page, our server passes the page's address, which page you came from, which browser you use (user agent) and your IP address on to Plausible. The same happens for a few actions, such as how far you've got in a chapter, that you've changed a reading setting like theme or text size, that you've used the map or the search, or that you've downloaded the book. Plausible uses the IP address and the browser to make an anonymous ID that changes every day, and does not store the IP address. What we send is never your name, your email, your account or what you search for, and nothing is stored that can be traced back to you as a reader.
When you log in with Google
You log in with Google or with a login link we send to your email. With Google, we only ask for your basic profile and your email address. We store:
- your Google ID, your name and email from Google, and whether Google has verified the email
- with a login link: your email address, and that it is verified once you've clicked the link. The link itself is stored too, but it only works for 15 minutes and only once
- the link to your profile picture at Google (it is not shown on the site)
- the display name you choose yourself
- the time you confirmed you are 13 or older
- your reading position: which chapter, how far you've reached, and when
- when the account was created and last changed
- for each login: your IP address, which browser you use, and when the login expires
- the tokens Google gives us when you log in
Your email is never shown to others, only to you on your own profile page. The display name is the name other readers will see when the site gets comments and reviews. Right now only you can see it.
If you're logged in, your browser also keeps a local copy of your reading position, so it can follow you between your devices.
Purpose and legal basis
- Account, login and your reading position across devices: to provide the service you have chosen to use (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)).
- IP address and browser at login, and stopping too many login attempts: to keep your account secure and the site stable. This is our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Confirming your age: because login is only for readers aged 13 and over (see below).
- Visitor statistics without cookies: so Mads can see which pages and chapters are read, and make the site better. This is our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)).
How long do we keep the information?
- Account and reading position: until you delete your account. We do not delete inactive accounts ourselves.
- Login: expires after 7 days of no use, and is extended when you use the site. It is deleted when you log out.
- Information in your browser: until you delete it yourself.
- IP addresses and mail addresses used to stop too many login attempts: only in the server's memory, only used for 10 minutes and cleared at the next login attempt or restart, never in the database.
- Visitor statistics: only as counts, without IP addresses. The anonymous daily ID changes every day.
Who processes the information?
- Hetzner Online GmbH runs the server and the database. Everything in the database is stored in Germany.
- Cloudflare, Inc. sits in front of the server as network and protection, and therefore sees your IP address and the pages you request. Cloudflare is a US company, and the transfer to the US happens under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which Cloudflare has joined.
- Plausible, which counts visits, runs on Mads' own server at Hetzner in the EU. The connection to it also goes through Cloudflare.
- Resend sends the email with the login link when you ask for one. Resend receives your email address and the email itself, sends it from servers in the EU (Ireland), and only processes them on our behalf as a data processor.
- Google handles the login itself and is responsible for your Google account.Read Google's privacy policy.
We do not sell your information and do not pass it on to others.
Age
Login is for readers aged 13 and over. The first time you log in, you must confirm that you are at least 13. If you're under 13, you're welcome to read the book without logging in.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- get access to the information we hold about you, and get a copy of it
- have incorrect information corrected (you can change your own display name on your profile page)
- have your information deleted
- have the processing of your information restricted
- receive your information in a common, machine-readable format (data portability)
- object to processing based on our legitimate interest
Write to us, and we will reply as soon as possible, and within one month at the latest: mads@mahoje.dk.
How to delete your account
Go to your profile page and choose "Delete my account". This immediately deletes your account, your Google information, your logins and your reading position from the database, and logs you out. What your browser has stored, you delete in your browser's settings.
Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we process your information, you can complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet). Please write to us first, so we can try to resolve it together. datatilsynet.dk.
