"Haven't you heard about me?"
The first time Chris notices Retia is at the river. She is the first to walk out into it. On the first evening she sits alone in the dining hall with an empty chair beside her. Chris sits down with her, and Ahra follows.
The one nobody will sit with
The other new students sit with the people they know from their old schools. None of them sit with Retia. There are rumours about her, and people accuse her of cheating. She assumes Chris has already heard them.
She is proud and reserved with strangers and warm with the people she trusts. When something is hard, she runs her hand through her hair.
What she can do
Retia thinks fast and keeps a cool head. During the island test, she is the one who reads the sun and the moss and finds the way. She makes blue fire, which she learned from her grandmother, and in the First-Year Room she is almost impossible to beat at magical stratego.
Her family
Retia lives in a white house in Tés Aváir with her mother Arvia and her little sister Cajis. Her father is hardly ever there, and she would rather not talk about him. He was good once, she says.
