"Welcome home, little brother"
Long before Chris meets Maka, he knows him through Ahra, who quotes his big brother all the time. Maka is in his third year and plays the guitar, and according to him, the third floor is the hardest to find your way around.
In the First-Year Room
The older years have their own rooms higher up, but Maka comes down regularly to look in on his little brother. Then he sits in an armchair, playing a guitar that now and then decides to change key all by itself. His scent is like Ahra’s, only deeper, like an older tree of the same kind.
The one who knows things
Maka is the one who explains to Chris what a black raven feather means when it is left without a message: someone wants to show him that they are watching, without saying who they are. He also tells him that on the last day of the year you can cross the river, if you are foolish enough. He crossed it himself the year before.
One evening in the third week he takes Chris down to the river and teaches him to sit still with his feet in the water and listen for what runs through it.
