About the series
Four siblings are sent to the countryside during the war to stay with an old professor. In an empty room stands a wardrobe, and behind the fur coats lies a land where it is always winter but never Christmas. Narnia is in the grip of the White Witch, and the animals talk and wait for the lion Aslan.
That is the best known of the seven books about Narnia. They follow different children who find their way into the land from our world, from its creation to its end. The books are short, full of adventure, and rich in Christian symbolism for those who look for it.
Narnia is one of those classics many people first meet as children and come back to as adults.
The books in the series
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950; Danish: Løven, heksen og garderobeskabet)
- Prince Caspian (1951; Danish: Prins Caspian)
- The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952; Danish: Morgenvandrerens rejse)
- The Silver Chair (1953; Danish: Sølvstolen)
- The Horse and His Boy (1954; Danish: Hesten og drengen)
- The Magician’s Nephew (1955; Danish: Troldmandens nevø)
- The Last Battle (1956; Danish: Det sidste slag)
The list is in publication order. Gyldendal numbers the Danish editions by the order of events in the story, so The Magician’s Nephew is number 1.
My thoughts
The wardrobe is still one of the best images there is of the idea that another world might lie just behind something completely ordinary. That idea has stayed with me ever since.
