Free fantasy books for young readers in Danish

There aren’t many fantasy books for young readers that are written in Danish and free to read. The easiest place to start is often the library, which also lends out e-books and audiobooks through eReolen and eReolen Go.

And then there’s The Raven’s Heir, which you can read right here on this site, without paying and without logging in.

What is The Raven’s Heir?

The Raven’s Heir is a Danish fantasy novel for young readers, written by Mads Holst Jensen. Chris is fifteen, lives at the care home Fjordly by the Kolding Fjord and has never known his parents. He doesn’t even have a surname. One day he finds a letter on his windowsill from Déynáir, a school for young people with magic, and it is addressed to Chris Godrand.

The rest of the story is about what that name means. Along the way he meets Ahra and Retia, a fox who speaks to him in his thoughts, and a world that has been hidden right next to his own.

Why is it free?

The book is being written while you read it. Mads has been working on the story for many years and is now publishing it chapter by chapter, so readers can follow along as it comes together. He writes it with the help of AI, but he makes every decision, and reads and edits everything himself.

The book is free to read, but all rights are reserved.

How to get started

Every chapter can be read in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. The site remembers where you left off, and you can choose a light or dark theme and a larger font. If you’d like to know more before you start, take a look at the world encyclopedia or meet the characters. Both are written without spoilers.
